Local Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A high-ranking official commented the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
