RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he said. "They were part of numerous British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
