Minister States Ministry of Defence Looking at Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Staff Instructed to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese-made cars, while personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret matters in all vehicles.

Safety Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD officials have been told not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and cause disruption to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.

This broader defence environment underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of government operations, including transport use to communication habits.
