Resurgent Medvedev Claims First Trophy in Over Two Years

19 of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been won on hard courts

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev secured his maiden title for 882 days with success over Frenchman Moutet in the competition title decider.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has endured a torrid period, managing just one match at the big events and suffering a setback at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and difficulties with his service game in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former trainer Gilles Cervara.

Presently working with Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 triumph over Frenchman Moutet.

This marks the player's first championship following the 2023 Rome Masters and maiden on a hardcourt since that period of that year.

The win also signifies the Russian has achieved 21 championships at twenty-one different competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my children simultaneously, so to get a title is really nice," commented world number 14 the champion.

"This victory is in honour of my second daughter my daughter, because the first title I won when my older daughter my daughter was born was for her."

Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his past six finals, including in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's defensive approach and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had caused observers to wonder if his ability to compete at the elite level was finished.

But the athlete has made changes in the last few weeks, attempting to come to the net and perform aggressively, supported by an enhanced serve.

The champion fought back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging Moutet, securing four of the final five games to take the lead.

The competitors swapped breaks in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his first professional victory, gained dominance to force a decider.

Moutet defended four early-game chances in a tight deciding set before Medvedev secured a break to 15 to secure the win.

Fittingly, the winner clinched victory with a shot at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to control a return after over two and a half hours.
