Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
