The Hamilton Island Resort, one of the Iconic Tropical Holiday Destination on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by American Private Equity Firm.
An iconic resort island situated on the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm for a sum said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to continue the vision and dedication that the family owners has established in the center of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to customary regulatory approvals.
The family issued a comment noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
The Island's Scale and Features
Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is developed, including a substantial range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- Over twenty dining and drinking venues
- 20 retail outlets
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, sustaining a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and area businesses.
A Look Back at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's development boom first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in several countries, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
