As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
