Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As England's Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

One snub was enough. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is extremely shrewd not to realize that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is equally on the midfielder to blend into the tactical structures and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's warm embrace.

The manager wants the player's competitive fire, his intensity, but it is about harnessing it constructively. Personal talent is important but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched England secure their spot at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He watched the young talent excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel mention loving the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in top form, finding the back of the net for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has made him realize that playing for one's country is a valuable, uncertain thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” the German stated. “Jude displays a competitive streak. You need a certain edge to achieve greatness that he reached. We all must support him and build an environment which he can channel that intensity towards opponents and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s final group games against Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted No 10 who needs support and direction. He has not played for England since March and has struggled to hit the heights recently but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in the Champions League match against the German side this week.

The issue, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be compelling reasons to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a ongoing injury. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, restricting the captain's influence in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he stated. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. In my view it fits his style the most.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“I think he is also so used to representing Man City in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

Tuchel mentioned Bellingham making runs for tap-ins and the other netting strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his good displays for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives if he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.

At the same time, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with his teammate going. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.

“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. There is still a sense of the player being on trial. He cannot even be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside self-importance outside. It will make a powerful England team into an even better one.
